There is another problem too. When doing PPC, people want to click YourName.com, not some long ridiculous link. They don’t want another affiliate to make money. So what do you do. You buy a domain name, redirect the url to your affiliate link, and BAM. You have YourName.com. You can do this using GoDaddy.com and they have video tutorials if you can’t figure it out.

So, assuming you have a product to promote, how should you advertise? As far as pay per click ads, I would stick with the popular search engines, and bid cheap. The best way is to actually have different ads in different search engines. Use very specific ad content too, so you have targeted traffic (and you get charged less.) There is nothing worse than having people click your ads that are not really interested in what you are offering. This will result in loss of funds and very few sales. Don’t get into bidding wars either, where you are fighting for the top spot in a certain search result. Everyone clicks on the number one spot out of curiosity. Most clicks don’t covert into sales. It is actually better to be number 5, 6, or 7, than 1 or 2. Even if you are 6 pages down because your bid is so low, eventually someone will see your ad. The best part about this is, the person who clicked your ad is TRULY interested in what you are offering, and this will most likely result in a sale. You could make $30 off a $.05 ad. If you were to repeat that over and over, you would become wealthy your first year.

Now I have to clarify that I am speaking of PPC above. If you have high organic ranking that you didn’t pay for, then by all means, get as close to the top as you can. But if you are a beginner, you don’t have to worry about having organic ranking any time soon.

Ad costs keep going up. You won't even be able to get listed for a $0.05 bid nowadays. They will make you pay WAY more than that or your ad won't even show. What a pain, right? Yes... but the story isn't over yet.

If you don’t have the money to do paid advertising, no big deal. I have advertised in every avenue know to man. You know what? This is my favorite. Writing articles that give me free permanent links to my website. It takes a while to build traffic this way, but it is VERY effective once you have put in your time. There is plenty of free information available. Anything you don’t understand, just Google it, and read what comes up.

Submit your articles manually, or at least do due research. Automatic submission may not always work the way they claim it does. You pay for it. It gets blocked as spam. They keep your money, and you get nothing. They are not all like that, but just be careful what you pay for. I have even used "article submitting software" and it's not that great. It doesn't even work on half of the websites so it's more of a pain than a help. Plus, directories hate auto submission. Just do it manually and everyone is happy.

I have read ebooks from numerous membership companies that offer affiliate websites. I actually bought the memberships and read the information. I have gained vast knowledge through most of them, though some were junk. I’m sure you know that you can get a free affiliate website with the purchase of an ebook or whatever from many gurus. They give you a "review" site. The kind that say, "I have reviewed 617.5 websites (like that is even possible) and here are the top 3 ways to make $713.18 a day online. Give me a break. Just because you quote some "exact" number doesn't make it REAL. The people that get these sites for free and promote them have no idea what they are even promoting, they just want a commission from Clickbank for the sale. Plus they never even reviewed 600 sites in the first place. It is a complete lie.

That said, I wanted to take the time to convey a few misconceptions that many companies articulate when recruiting new prospects. Commonsense should alert you that these statements are too good to be true.

Here are my thoughts on the most common exaggerations I hear by recruiters in the industry. Beware!

1. "Our turnkey system does 90-100% of the marketing and selling for you!"

Actually, there are no turnkey systems that do all the marketing and selling for you – only ones that help with the explaining and the information gathering process. Please don't be gullible here. Most affiliate marketers have replicated websites that certainly do have a helpful place, but they do not and will not replace your human effort.

2. "Being an internet marketer is easy."

Not true. No business endeavor is easy. However, in theory internet marketing is not that complicated, but it does require great consistency and effort – especially during the heavy learning curve period of the first few months. Fortunately, the financial rewards in this industry can be huge.

The great advantage of internet marketing is that massive amounts of automation and leverage can be used to your advantage every day. Compared to starting a typical brick and mortar business, most online businesses have very inexpensive entry price points and are far less risky.

3. "There is no selling involved."

Umm...I don't think so. Most internet marketers are essentially affiliate marketers who market the products or service of a larger company. So yes, there is selling. Personally, I don't pay for leads and I don't cold call. I use what's called "my story marketing" and I do my marketing online. In essence, "my story marketing" is just leading with your own story instead of directly pitching your opportunity. By leading with your story and by branding yourself as a leader online, people can essentially "get to know you" before they are presented with your opportunity. This is good because in reality, people don't buy businesses, they buy people. So, the next time someone joins your business, remember they're not really buying an opportunity, they're buying you...as a leader. So make sure when you start marketing online that you tell your story well and really convey to your prospects how you can help them succeed.

5. "Anyone can succeed in internet business."

Actually, 97% of the people who start in online business never make any money. So really, most people can't succeed. But, that doesn't mean there aren't a lot who do. In fact, the big key lies in aligning yourself with a mentor who knows how to market online – and who can teach you to leverage your time and resources effectively. Obviously, you need dedication, consistency and patience to achieve success, just like with any other business, but if you don't have a knowledgeable mentor, then you most likely won't be able to become a top earner in the industry.

Broad Match

The Broad match is a default mode for Google Adwords and other search advertising systems. It represents keyword entries as they are typed in the search box without any defining attribution whatsoever. For example, golf club typed in as such, would represent a keyword that could be rendered in the order you typed it, but could also be returned with the words golf and club in other combinations as well. The golf and club words could also appear with singular/plural forms, synonyms and other relevant variations. So your results could show golf clubs, cheap golf clubs, used golf clubs, clubs for golf and whatever variation is being entered by the people looking for or writing about golf clubs.

The broad match is as open and varied as the entries coming from the users on the Web.

Phrase Match

When you enter a keyword in quotation marks, you are now in the realm of the phrase match. Your phrase match appears with the keywords in the order in which they are entered, "golf club" but with the possibility of other terms in the query. The order is respected but the composition of the word context allows for other terms as well. Golf club for beginners is a phrase match combo, for example. As long as the exact phrase is maintained in the order it is entered you have a phrase match.

Exact Match

When you surround your phrase in brackets [ ] your search will return only those keywords with the specific phrase, in the exact order, and without any other terms in the query. There will be no synonyms, variations of singular or plural or any contextual change at all. You would only see the exact return of the keyword as it is entered. The numbers you get are for the exact match as they are entered by the web user.

Negative Keyword

A negative keyword match eliminates a keyword from search terms for your internet marketing campaign. It is a keyword preceded by a minus sign (-). For example –cheap is a negative keyword and could be specified by a golf club vendor who wants to weed out those who do not fit the profile for his/her high end golf clubs. Inserting the negative keyword would avoid wasting money on clicks coming from the low end of the golf club market. Negative keyword matches have the function of weeding out irrelevant searches.

But, one of the "laws" of affiliate marketing that can't be broken is PREselling. Basically, PREselling is "warming up" your website visitor to be more apt to click to the merchant site and buy their product, thus earning you the commission. When taken into context with other affiliate marketing "laws", this one is the most important.

Here's why. When a person lands at your site and all you have is a "hard sell" approach (banners, sales pitch, a bunch of links to click on), the visitor is immediately thrown into defensive mode. They are looking for information but are in turn pressured to buy something.

But, when you PREsell your visitor you are cultivating a relationship with words, in the form of web content, that will disarm the visitor, make them feel all warm and fuzzy, and increase the likelihood of them clicking your link to make a purchase at the merchant's site. (Of course this process also works with your own product also).

So, the question that begs to be asked is how do you PREsell? It's not as hard as you think, and anyone can do it.

In my experience, there are five very powerful PREselling techniques that will multiply your current affiliate earnings exponentially.

Write your web content like you're talking to someone

If there was one "BIG DOG" of PREselling it's to be real. Don't try to use super big words to show how smart you are. You're just making someone else feel dumb. Talk like you would with your friends. After all, that's the goal. Be the readers friend.

Share the problems you've had, how you got over it, what process you took, what product helped you... etc.

This is what people want. Real, relevant and relational information.

One of the reasons that anybody can PREsell is that everyone talks to their friends. Since PREselling is "talking", in essence, reflect your uniqueness and personality in your web content.

Don't Start Out With Unbelievable Statements or Promises

Over the top promises and statements are what the merchant's sales page is for. Not a relationship building, PREselling type web page.

For instance, if you are writing web content for baseball bats, you wouldn't start out with "Amazing New Technology Creates SUPER BATS that hit HomeRuns Everytime!"

But, you might write up a little report on how, when you used a new bat, you were able to connect with the ball much harder, resulting in more base hits. Something like..."New baseball bat helped me raise by batting average by increasing the number of strong base hits."

See the difference. One is FLASH, the other is personal. One that people can relate to that want to raise their batting average.

Stick with one main topic, or keyword

People are trying so hard to optimize their sites for keyword after keyword in order to ensure the highest rankings possible. Thus, they create web content that sound mechanical and unpersonable. Stick with one keyword, and write about it.

Again, using the baseball bat example, I would design my content around increasing batting average. Because while I'm concentrating on that keyword, other are naturally written into the content. I just sound like a regular guy talking about hitting and not a machine.

Sprinkle affiliate recommendations over your content

But don't go overboard. Three, four, five links max on your website will keep the reader much more focused on what you want them to do. Being relationship minded doesn't mean you're a pacifist.

You still want a response from the person visiting your site. But, if you have too many options for a response, the chances are you won't get any. I struggled with this one early in my affiliate marketing career. "The more the better!" was my motto. But, it just didn't work.

When I did a little test on an affiliate site of mine, removing all but four links... three for the merchant and one for a comparable one... the results (conversion rates of visitors to sales) shot through the roof.

A very light sprinkling of affiliate links in your content will help you PREsell your visitor much more effectively than loading it down.

Write your content like you are the person reading it

One of the major downfalls to writing web content is that the people writing it only see it through their eyes. Effective PREselling is looking at your content through the eyes of the person reading it.

Did you answer a question people are asking?

Are you writing on their level? Did you go over their head?

Is it relevant to people's needs and situations?

Do you sound unapproachable and mechanical?

In recent weeks I have been particularly searching for some good, safe, genuine sites for affiliate programs which would especially appeal to stay-at-home Moms. I have been really and pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of programs that are available. Most do not come with the sometimes questionable 75% commission tags of so many of the over-the-top hyped up sites which seem to abound in the GPT arena, but nevertheless, there are some very nice commissions to be earned, which can give you anything from $300-$1,000 extra income a month, depending upon how much work you want to put in.

As we all know, so many of us are overweight, but I didn’t want to go for the so-called weight loss programs, as frankly, I think only someone with the medical qualifications can sensibly advise on this. But what I did feel was missing, especially for the ladies, was a good site for plus sizes, where the designs didn’t look more like a tent we could all camp out in. So, naturally as a good internet marketer, I Googled "plus size dresses" to see who was at the top or near it.

Sure enough I found one, where the designs were feminine, sensuous even, but also practical, and at prices which would not break the bank. Their Affiliate Program was also a pretty attractive offering . It was an easy choice and soon had me looking for the next one, which I wanted to also appeal to stay-at-home Dads.

I recalled seeing something about US Government Car Auctions, where cars, SUVs and trucks that have been seized by various Government agencies (FBI, DEA, IRS etc) are put up for auction at very low prices. Discounts are substantial as reserve prices are low or even non-existent. Storage of vehicles is an expensive business, so again, with prices kept low, turnover is quick, and storage costs are minimized. Clearly this was an attractive proposition, even more so if there was a good Affiliate Program, and sure enough, there was.

My wife asked me if I had looked for anything under ‘handicrafts’ – I had not, and boy, was this a great area in which to search. I found a website called Associate Programs which was a goldmine of information. It wasn’t hard to find programs covering:

Promoting business is relatively easy, although there are better ways to do it that yield better results for you.

There is a lot of controversy an affiliate commissions and link cloaking. Should you cloak your affiliate links and how do you if you are losing money or not?

The first question that people ask on various affiliate forums is why should I cloak my affiliate links? Is link cloaking an obligation?

Let's answer to the first one...

You cloak your affiliate links to prevent one of these three situations:

1- Prevent Link hijacking

In this case, a smart affiliate will steal your link since he is able to see your referral link and replace it by his own.

He can see your affiliate links in:

1- The address bar of your browser

2- The status bar

3- On your web page (He just need to view the source code from his browser)

Even if you try to disable the right click on your page, a savvy hijacker will still be able to view the source of your page.
